They had always been “just friends.”
That’s what they told everyone. That’s what they told themselves.
But moments betrayed them—the way her smile softened when he walked in, the way he noticed even the smallest change in her mood. It wasn’t ordinary. It was something deeper… something they were both afraid to name.
That evening, the city lights shimmered below as they stood on the rooftop. A quiet breeze moved between them, carrying unspoken feelings neither dared to release.
“You ever feel like something’s about to change?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
He looked at her, really looked this time. “Yeah… right now.”
Her heart raced, but she didn’t step away.
“Maybe we shouldn’t ruin what we have,” she said, though her eyes held onto his.
“Or maybe,” he replied softly, stepping closer, “this is what it was always meant to be.”
The distance between them faded naturally, like it had never existed at all. His hand found hers, warm and steady, sending a quiet spark through her.
“Tell me to stop,” he murmured.
She shook her head gently.
That was all it took.
He leaned in, slow and certain, giving her every chance to pull away—but she didn’t. Their lips met in a soft, lingering kiss that felt less like a beginning and more like something they had waited for forever.
Time paused.
The world disappeared.
And in that silence, everything became clear.
When they finally parted, she rested her forehead against his, a small smile forming.
“So… we were never just friends, were we?”
He smiled back, his voice low and sure.
“Not even close.”
And this time, neither of them tried to deny it.
